Bosco Verticale, Milan

Architect: Stefano Boeri Architetti

Two residential towers in Milan covered in balcony trees and shrubs

Each tower’s balconies were structurally engineered to carry the weight of mature trees and their root systems — a decision made at the earliest design stage rather than retrofitted, which is why the planting reads as integral to the building’s form rather than applied to its surface.

Growing systems

  • Balcony-integrated tree planters

Materials

  • Reinforced-concrete balcony structure sized for tree root loads
  • Automated drip irrigation fed by filtered wastewater

Technology

  • Centralized irrigation monitoring
