Eden Project, Cornwall

Architect: Grimshaw Architects

The geodesic biome domes of the Eden Project set in a former clay pit

Built into a disused china clay quarry, the Eden Project’s biomes use lightweight ETFE cushions rather than glass — a fraction of the weight, letting the geodesic steel frame span much larger distances than conventional greenhouse glazing would allow.

Growing systems

  • Tropical rainforest biome
  • Mediterranean biome

Materials

  • ETFE cushion glazing
  • Steel space-frame structure

Technology
